When I was a little girl and struggled with sleep my mom used to tell me to count my blessings instead of sheep. She would tell me to think of every family member and friend I could and say a short prayer for each one. The purpose of this was not to bore me but to put my mind in a happy, relaxed state as I focused on all the positive points in my life. It worked every time.
A few weeks ago when I was struggling with not going back to work while all my friends were returning after Mat leave, I had Ten Toes Tuesday and Thankful Thursday posts. I found that blogging about my blessings put my mind in that same happy and content state I found when I was a kid. Since that week I haven't struggled at all with not returning to work and am quite content and even ecstatic to be able to stay home. So in honor of it being Thanksgiving next weekend today's Momdrum beater is about being thankful.
We're going to create a "Blessings Box" where you and your family can "count your blessings" this holiday season! It will also make a fun centerpiece of fall decoration.
What you will need:
-Old Kleenex box
-Scissors
-Glue
- colourful leaves, pine cones, etc. (fall foliage)
-pictures of loved ones/friends
-Fall coloured construction paper
-Fall coloured ribbon, beads, or button
-pen
-Small Pad of paper (like sticky note sized)
How kids can help:
-If they are old enough they can help cut and glue
Instructions:
1. Cover the kleenex box with pretty coloured construction paper. Leave a slit or an opening in the top where the kleenex would come out and cut a small flap in the bottom that you can open later.
2. Glue on pictures of loves ones and friends (Idea: Take some cute shots of your kids out in the leaves and use those!)
3. Decorate the box with ribbon, beads, buttons, leaves, or pine cones
4. On the top write "Blessings Box"
5. Set up on table or somewhere in the house with the pad of paper and pen beside
Now throughout the week you and the rest of your family can write down blessings as you think of them and pop them in the box. Over Thanksgiving dinner you can open the flap in the bottom and read out all the blessings that abound in your home!

Beating the Momdrums Monday - The Dry/Wet difference
The potty training parade is proceeding with precision....almost. We're still quite stuck on two points: Using the potty in public (in other words: anxiety of the too large toilet), and peeing on the potty 100% of the time. We have some days with almost no accidents and even a few accident free...but those are mostly do to my being REALLY on the ball those days. I don't want to spend forever forcing her to sit on the potty every half hour so today's Momdrum Monday beater is an attempt at a teaching tool.
What you will need:
Random objects such as a pair of panties, a pull up, a diaper, some paper cut outs, a piece of cloth, etc.
Water
How Child Can be involved:
Help wet objects
Point to objects
Pick out objects
Go around the house collecting random things to show your child the difference between wet and dry. Once you have some collected have your child touch them and tell them it's "dry". Then help your child dip things in water and explain "wet". Ask them if they can point out the difference between wet items and dry items. Show them pictures of things that are wet like rain, swimming pool, etc. Show them pictures of things that are dry such as sand, wood, etc.
I have no idea if this will help Little Lady pull off peeing consistently in the potty but at least it's a different activity to do. Plus it has an educational twist!

MOMDRUM UPDATE: Little Lady and I had a blast creating last weeks activity! We used bright coloured beads for our shaker and covered it in stickers. Little Lady really enjoyed filling the bottle bead by bead and then putting on the stickers. She's already got a lot of enjoyment from the shaker!

Beating the Momdrums Monday - Shake Shake What your mamma gave ya!
I've been feeling "crafty" lately. A sure sign that winter is approaching and the days of strolling in the sunshine are fading away. Actually I love the fall, it's one of my favourite times of year. I love the first frost, the smell or pumpkins and cinnamon, the bright array of colours, the nip of crisp cold. However, fall also means I need to get especially creative with inside ideas for Little Lady and I.
Another reason I love crafts is because if they are easy...you can complete them. And they STAY completed. So little in my life does. I sweep the floor only to step on crumbs two seconds later. I do the laundry only to have the hamper full in half an hour because someone spilled something. I wipe down the mirror only to see smudges from someone kissing their reflection right after I do it. Crafts stay complete. I can look at it and say...I accomplished something today.
Little Lady loves music and anything that makes it so today's Momdrum beater is a music making craft.
You'll need: plastic water bottle with cap, odds and ends in bright colours and various shapes, glue gun or super glue.
Ways kids can help: Add things to bottle, colour objects.
1. Find a plastic water bottle. Wash it out.
2. Collect macaroni, glitter, rice, bits of bright paper, basically just odds and ends
3. Colour some of them if you want
4. Place odds and ends in bottle
5. Glue lid on bottle with glue gun or super glue so it won't come off if baby gums it.
6. Let your toddler shake, rock, and roll!

Beating the Momdrums Monday
Cool weather and fluffy gray clouds have invaded our warm wonderful days of summer. This season was spent finding every opportunity we could to splah in the swimming pool and now sadly those days are done. We don't have an indoor pool near our place so I've come up with a swimming substitute for this weeks "Beating the momdrums monday".
Fill your kiddie pool with some nice warm water and lots of soap suds and set it out on the kitchen floor or wherever you don't mind if things get a little wet. Bring out the sand toys, shovels and sieves. Search through your cupboards for some creative "beach" toys like containers, cups, and bowls. Get into your swimsuits and splash!
I'll be posting pics of Little Lady and I in our "indoor pool" a little later!
